Tai Chi Chuan is known to have an effect on fine motor control.
Jin Yan at the University of Houston examined the effect of Tai
Chi training on force output during arm movements. In this study,
he compared consistency in manual aiming movements between participants
of Tai Chi Chuan as an exercise (n=12) and a group who walked or
jogged (n=8). The Tai Chi Chuan group moved with significantly less
pressure variability than the control group. It seems likely that
whole body coordination improves integration of the sensory-motor
system optimizing motor control.
People with difficulty writing due to problems with coordination
may see an improvement in this area due to Tai Chi Chuan practice.
