Ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis

Physical therapy and exercise are for ankylosing spondylitis. Gentle movement will help diminish pain and stiffness, while exercise that is too intense can increase inflammation and make the pain worse.

Some clients find a cane to help assist in balance and relieve some pressure on affected joints while walking and standing. Maintaining good posture can reduce the likelihood of a fully fused spine.

Holistic physical therapy usually includes some combination of:

  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • Osteopathic Manual Therapy
  • Strength Training
  • Flexibility Training
  • Postural Training
  • Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement

to improve posture, flexibility and pain.

Holistic physical therapist, Bill Gallagher, treats Ankylosing spondylitis in New York City. He has an office on the upper West Side (88th & Broadway), makes house calls to the upper East side and upper West side of Manhattan (NYC).
