Failed back syndrome is a too common complication of lumbar spine surgery . It can result in chronic pain and disability, often with disastrous emotional and financial consequences. Many patients are "written off" to a life of long-term narcotic treatment with little chance of recovery. Contributing factors can include residual or recurrent disc herniation, persistent pressure on a spinal nerves, decreased joint mobility, excessive joint mobility (hypermobility) with instability, scar tissue , depression, anxiety, insomnia and muscular weakness.
