Mental Techniques

The connection between the mind and physical health has been well documented in the scientific literature. Integrative Physical Therapy employs physical techniques like Yoga, Tai Chi & Qigong to soothe the mind and mental techniques like Meditation, Guided Imagery and Cognitive-Behavioral Training to heal the body.


Meditation

Meditation is an excellent way to elicit a relaxation response, train and strengthen awareness, center and focus the self, halt constant mind-chatter
and relax the mindbody, calm the central nervous system, relieve stress, enhance self-esteem, reduce anxiety, alleviate depression and all forms of suffering. Evidence is mounting that this pillar of the universal spiritual culture,
as it brings awareness to bear on all aspects of life, facilitates healing from within. Meditation instruction is tailored to each client in a pragmatic,
non-judgmental way.

Guided Imagery
Positive mental imagery can promote mental and muscle relaxation, decrease pain, improve mood, control high blood pressure, boost the immune system, and lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Through guided imagery, people can learn to control functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature. Imagery can be used virtually anywhere, anytime. It is probably the easiest relaxation technique for most people to master.

Cognitive-Behavioral Training
Perception of the meaning behind pain and disability can help perpetuate and intensify suffering. For example, people in chronic pain are likely to experience more suffering if they believe that the pain is a permanent punishment. By modifying how we think about pain and disability, this unnecessary suffering is avoided. Likewise, by learning to see the world through a more optimistic lens, one may find untapped energetic resources and improve performance.
